Grade 5 Camp

by Hannah 5K and James 5S

This year Grade 5 went on their camp at Sovereign Hill. But instead of all three grades going together, we had 5k going from the 25-26th July; 5S on the 27-28th July and 5E on the 25-26th August.

The grades all attended the Raggedy School. The poorer children of the Gold Rush would attend this school and learn a trade. The boys helped a wheelwright and made winkies at the candle-maker's shop while the girls sewed and painted tiles. Copperplate writing was difficult and made even trickier by having to use dip pens.

In free time we played with horseshoes, ball and cup, rings with sticks, skipping ropes and spinning tops. At lunchtime some of us went gold panning and shopping. The boiled lollies were very popular. After school we were taken on a tour of the Red Hill mine and saw a replica of the Welcome Nugget.

We had tea in the dining room of the United States Hotel, then went on a tour of Blood on the Southern Cross. It was cool, literally. After the end of Peter Lalor's speech, we walked up the hill to the Sovereign Hill Lodge to get some sleep before attending our last day at the Raggedy School.

Everyone had a great time.

Here are some pictures and comments from the trip.
