LEADERSHIP

This is a text all about what Jessica  learned about at her trip to the Young Leaders Conference on the 7th April.

It tells you what a leader needs and how to cope with different types of circumstances.

Some people think that leadership is about being boss, some people think it’s about responsibility and some people think that it’s just a privilege given to someone “special”. One of these things is right. It’s not about being boss. It’s not just a privilege given to someone special because everyone is special in their own way. But in some ways it is about responsibility. Leaders are expected to be responsible, but there are a lot of other things as well and this text will tell you all about them.

Bye bye daddy I'll miss you

What a Leader Needs

Leaders need a lot of things. Including: integrity, love, care, persistence, pride, passion, commitment and trust. And leaders don’t worry about peer pressure. Leaders take risks, they try again and before they try again they rethink what they have done. They also need to be a good decision maker.

A major thing that affects human beings is that they give up just because their feelings are hurt, like Paul Jennings for instance.

When he was 12 years old he wrote a story and gave it to the Women's Weekly to publish but they wouldn’t publish it for him. His feelings were so hurt, that he never wrote again until he was 38 and now look what he is doing! What he did was give up because he was hurt inside and that was a pretty silly thing to do. So leaders don’t give up.

Leaders are not bosses.  A lot of people don’t much like their bosses and a leader is someone who people WANT to follow.   To do that you need to get out, have fun, be friendly, give a smile or a wave, and most importantly; don’t lose your sense of humour! People don’t like you if you are straight and if you can’t take a joke.

Being yourself is really important, and being true to yourself. When you’re a leader people want to see the real you. When trying to get into the “Hot Seat” (as some people would put it,) be natural, people want to see the real you.

Being a leader doesn’t mean that you can go off and forget about everyone else in the world. You need to remember that not everyone is as strong, and brave as you.

Role models. A leader MUST be a good role model. It’s like being in grade 6. The younger people of the school will look up to you and if you do something naughty the younger children will think, well if the older kids can do that, so can we. Some good role models to look out for are: coaches, family and teachers. So in a way all these people are leaders as well!

Dealing With Stress

Stress can be really painful. Before you try and take on the world and all of its stress you need to be able to take on your own stress.

Stress is usually triggered off by being angry, nervous, worried or scared.  When you are either angry or scared you tend to freak out. There are different ways of dealing with stress and calming yourself back down again. Some people argue or get physical and fight, but that is a bad way to relieve stress. Some people walk away, stop, freeze or hold their breath. If you hold your breath you are locking it into yourself and you need to get rid of it. Energy moves up and down your body when you are stressed. When you are totally stressed out it rises up to your head. (That's why you go red.) And you need to do something to make it travel back down to your feet.

There are three things that you can do.

BREATHE: Take one big breath in and let it out really, really slowly.

SOUND EFFECTS: Aaugh. Have a sigh. You release more energy when you use sound effects.

STAMP: If you stamp your feet 20 times the energy moves back down to your feet.

What people expect

A leader is thought of as a person who shows the way. But remember that you can’t control everything. A leader isn’t always independent. A lot of the time a leader is part of a team.

Push to the limits, your plan won’t always work but at least you can say that you tried.

When you are asked a question don’t give a straight forward answer because it helps to think things over first.

A very big crowd Your famous Ivan

Compliments

Most people don’t know how to take compliments without putting them back in your face. You need to know how to say, Thank you, I think so too. without saying, Oh, no it isn’t, yours is better.

Don't fiddle with your hands

Optimism

Sometimes some projects don’t even get started because the people that are working on them are too afraid of failing, and that they won’t be able to do it. This is caused by low self esteem. People with a low self esteem usually don’t get anywhere in life and to be a leader you need a very high self esteem. That doesn’t mean that you should think so highly of yourself that you are known as posh or stuck up, it just means have enough optimism to be happy. Leaders must be optimistic not pessimistic. No matter what you do have a Can Do attitude at all times. Without being pessimistic it helps to say to yourself when and where you went wrong, and a leader needs to have the courage to do that. Always aim for P.B’s (Personal Bests.)

Shoot for the moon is one of Tammy Van Wisse’s favourite phrases.

The power of mental thinking can get you a long way as long as your thinking is that you can do what you want to do. Remember that there is no such thing as failure.

It doesn’t matter if at school no one ever tells you that you are good at something because if you dream then you will achieve and do anything you want to do.

Some More Little Tips

Remember you don’t need to be a leader young to be a leader old. So it doesn’t matter if you didn’t make school captain or a house captain you might grow up to be Prime Minister of Australia!!

You must learn to be a leader not a follower.

A leader has one great asset that is very important to them. And that is their name.

DO NOT damage it. Don't cheat, steal or lie. Look after your reputation. You are the boss of your attitude.

So that is my text about being a leader and what you need. I hope you have learned something from it.
